False and manipulated information is circulating at unprecedented levels across the information ecosystem, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources. This online self-paced course offers an overview of misinformation and disinformation, including why it exists, who is creating it, and the risks it poses to individuals, organizations and democratic institutions. Participants will learn how to recognize different types of false and manipulated information, and identify and take actionable steps to reduce its spread in their everyday lives.
Topics include:
- distinguishing between misinformation, disinformation and malinformation
- describing types of actors involved in information manipulation and their motivations
- recognizing the impacts of manipulated information on democratic institutions
- exploring the role of digital technologies in the creation, spread and consumption of manipulated information
