Description
The Canada School of Public Service actively attracts and recruits facilitators with knowledge and experience of all aspects of public service administration. This course, offered exclusively to new facilitators at the Canada School of Public Service, introduces best practices, facilitation techniques and classroom management skills for preparing and delivering learning activities such as courses or events. Through a blend of self-paced content and virtual classroom instruction, participants will be presented with opportunities to observe, interact with and learn from experienced instructors and their peers when engaging with an audience of adult learners.
Topics include:
- reviewing adult learning principles
- identifying different behaviours commonly found in the classroom
- devising effective strategies for engaging with a learning audience
- practising facilitating in a virtual environment, including using the web conference learning platform
- exploring facilitation techniques and classroom management skills for use in traditional and virtual classrooms
Notes:
This course is offered exclusively to new learning facilitators at the Canada School of Public Service.
This course consists of a series of modules that contain both self-study and group learning activities. The time commitment needed to complete this course is about 28 hours (15 hours of virtual instructor-led time and 13 hours of individual self-study).
At the end of the course, participants will be asked to prepare and deliver a sample lesson to demonstrate their newfound facilitation, presentation and communication skills. This lesson will be assessed and must be completed successfully to pass the course.

Pre-course activities:
Pre-course activities are provided at the pre-course information session, and require approximately 2 hours of self-study to complete on your own time.
Week 1:

Modules 1 to 5 include 10 hours of mandatory virtual instructor-led training, and approximately 10 hours of self-study to complete on your own time.
Week 2:
- Module 6
- Understanding equity, diversity, and inclusivity
- Optional practice sessions
- Preparing for your final evaluation
Module 6 includes 2 hours of mandatory virtual instructor-led training, and 2 hours of self-study activities to complete on your own time. It also provides approximately 3 hours to prepare for the final evaluation. If required, additional practice sessions can be made available.
Week 3:
- Module 7
- Final evaluation
Module 7 requires approximately 3.5 hours to complete the final evaluation.
