Description
The CSPS Digital Accelerator Program is a transformative learning experience that helps established teams transition to new digital ways of working together. The program consists of a series of facilitated workshops, meet-ups, and events spread over a 6-month period designed to prototype a human-centred solution to a current business problem. Through a combination of practical interventions, peer learning, coaching and mentoring, participants will develop and apply design, product management, and Agile methods to address and advance a business problem faced by their organization.
Topics include:
- learning by doing – designing, prototyping and testing solutions to current business problems
- breaking boundaries – convening cross-functional teams that are more digitally capable
- changing with confidence – embracing and actively creating change
- collaborating to succeed – exploring and testing different tools, activities, and methods of networking and collaborating
- designing an empowering experience – shifting the way we work, create and share
Notes:
Registration to the 2023-24 cycle of the CSPS Digital Accelerator Program is reserved for teams working on a problem together, or working on a project or service they want to improve. Prior to registration, the team must have the support of an executive champion.
The program consists of a series of facilitated workshops, meet-ups, and events spread over a 6-month period. The program ends with teams presenting at "Demo Day," an opportunity to share their learning journey with other public servants across the Government of Canada.

This online self-paced course explains how to analyze and translate user data into meaningful improvements towards a better user experience. Participants will learn to define opportunities to use user data through tools like experience mapping and affinity clustering.
Design Thinking for Innovation: Prototyping and Testing
This online self-paced course presents techniques for prototyping and testing new ideas when iteratively developing solutions with stakeholders. Participants will explore different prototype methods, including conducting usability tests and using heuristics in expert reviews.
Design Thinking for Innovation: Stakeholder Engagement
This online self-paced course provides insights into the best ways to engage and interact directly with key stakeholders using design thinking methods. Participants will learn how to apply an empathetic mindset and use tools such as maps and personas to understand their stakeholders' points of view and better respond to their needs.
Developing and Supporting an Agile Mind-set
This online self-paced course explains the importance and benefits of developing an organizational culture that is agile and open to change. Participants will learn the characteristics that distinguish an agile mindset from a fixed mindset, and ways to encourage and build an enterprise that is responsive to change.
Exploring the Relationship Between UI/UX Design
This online self-paced course explores the relationship between the user interface (UI) and the user experience (UX) for the creation of user-pleasing apps. Participants will examine design principles and key trends in UI and UX design and learn how to evaluate the emotional impact of the user experience.
How to Be Digital in the Canadian Public Service
Developed in partnership with 10 provincial and territorial governments across Canada, this six-week online micro-course explores what digital looks like in the Canadian government context and examines digital concepts such as agile and human-centred design. Through weekly lessons sent by email, participants will learn how to apply the culture and values of the digital workplace in their everyday work.
Introduction to Agile in the Public Service
This online self-paced course introduces the concepts, tools, practices and behaviours that support an Agile culture in the modern workplace. Participants will review the principles that drive agility individually and within teams, in order to encourage and sustain an adaptive culture across the public service.
Introduction to Human-Centred Design
This online self-paced course introduces the principles of human-centred design and how to create policies, programs, services and tools that are feasible and reflect the needs of real people. Participants will gain a basic awareness of common design concepts and learn how to define and solve problems by researching, designing, prototyping, and testing directly with users.
Introduction to Product Management in the Public Service
This online self-paced course introduces the key concepts of product management and recommends best practices for creating products in a public service context. Participants will learn about product teams, including the different roles, responsibilities and skillsets of team members, as well as some of the tools available to assist them.
The Design Process: Design Research
This online self-paced course outlines the benefits of design research and introduces common methodologies and key considerations for conducting data-driven, user-centric research in the public service context. Participants will learn how to properly formulate design research questions and apply best practices to obtain answers that are evidence-based and derived from reliable user data.
The Design Process: Understanding the Problem
This online self-paced course presents the foundational methods and tools needed to identify and analyze problems that need solving. Participants will learn how to apply these discovery methods in their work and use sound problem framing to set up the next steps in the design process.
