The term ”polycrisis” refers to how multiple crises occurring simultaneously or in rapid succession interact and exacerbate each other. The ongoing polycrisis places a tremendous strain on social cohesion, connectedness and the solidarity that Canadians feel towards each other and towards our country.

The 2024 Manion Lecture, featuring keynote speaker Dr. Alika Lafontaine, an award-winning physician and past president of the Canadian Medical Association, will examine the changes taking place in the Canadian health care system and their impact on our social cohesion. Drawing on his personal and professional life, Dr. Lafontaine will discuss the human experience of systemic change and how changes to public health policies are enabling citizens to better manage their own interests.

Using the history of Canada’s publicly funded health care system as a touchstone, participants will learn about the relationship between polycrises and social cohesion, the central role that public health policies have in improving or worsening them, as well as how in the past, public health policies successfully solved problems that are now contributing to the crises we are facing today.

Following Dr. Lafontaine’s keynote address, a panel of distinguished guests will discuss lessons learned from the present-day health care polycrisis and highlight what citizens and governments need to accomplish next.

The Manion Lecture is the Canada School of Public Service's flagship event and an annual tradition that goes back 30 years. Learn more about the Manion Lecture and past lectures.
