Description

Stability in the Indo-Pacific region is essential for global security; however, great power competition is escalating interstate tensions, many of which are rooted in historical conflicts. Peace and stability are being jeopardized by nuclear provocations, territorial and maritime border disputes, coups and internal violence, all of which are exacerbated by climate change stressors, poverty and inequality. Canada and its allies are engaging in the region by enhancing their presence through diplomacy, military investment and aid.

This event will provide an overview of the Indo-Pacific region’s traditional and non-traditional security and defence landscape. Speakers will discuss the landscape’s structures, alliances, mechanisms and dynamics, and the perspectives of India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, small island nations and countries on these issues, as well as the impacts globally and for Canada.

Participants will learn about the security and defence challenges, strategic interests and collaborative efforts shaping the future of the region.
