Description

Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is a structured approach used to identify and assess potential outcomes to better inform decisions. This course explores the intricacies of the CBA process and emphasizes how rigorous analysis is pivotal to supporting evidence-based decision-making, specifically by federal regulators. Participants will acquire the skills needed to conduct a basic CBA to support the creation of a regulatory impact analysis statement (RIAS).

Topics include:

  • revisiting the theoretical foundations of CBA
  • building CBA models
  • assessing potential positive and negative outcomes
  • supporting quantitative, qualitative and monetizing analyses
  • summarizing results and drafting recommendations for decision-makers

Required equipment for virtual courses

To fully participate in the School's virtual courses, you must have a camera and a microphone.

Notes:

To receive a certificate of completion, participants must attend two virtual instructor-led sessions over the course of two weeks. They must prepare for the instructor-led sessions by also completing five online self-paced modules:

  1. Self-paced modules 1 and 2
  2. Virtual instructor-led session 1 (week 1; 2.5 hours)
  3. Self-paced modules 3, 4 and 5
  4. Virtual instructor-led session 2 (week 2; 2.5 hours)

Learners who are unfamiliar with the basic concepts of cost-benefit analysis are encouraged to complete Cost-Benefit Analysis for Federal Regulators: Introduction (FON202) before registering for this course.
