Required equipment for virtual courses

To fully participate in the School's virtual courses, you must have a camera and a microphone.

Understanding the mechanics of government decision-making is valuable knowledge for public servants who are engaged in the policy process and who support the parliamentary process. This course provides participants with an opportunity to better understand their role and their impact within the federal government structure. Participants will learn how their contributions help to achieve the goals of government, whether this be developing or evaluating policy, or implementing programs or services.

Topics include:

  • exploring the federal policy cycle
  • identifying the main actors in the federal decision-making process
  • outlining the roles and responsibilities of the federal government and its governance structure
  • examining the three phases of the federal decision-making process: policy cover, funding and authorities
  • identifying the mechanisms through which Parliament and the courts ensure accountability of the executive branch

Notes:

This is an intermediate-level course that provides an in-depth analysis in the government decision-making process. It is intended for executives, aspiring executives, policy analysts and program officers. The course will benefit learners who:

  • implement government programs and services
  • support the implementation of government programs and services
  • maintain and develop policy
  • monitor and evaluate the work of government

This course is divided into two three-hour sessions and relies on open group discussions during the virtual sessions where the facilitator will offer answers or clarifications during the discussions and encourage participants to reflect on how the course content applies to their different roles throughout the public service.

An understanding of how government works is needed to fully engage and participate in the course. Participants are encouraged to complete How the Canadian Government Works: Setting the Stage for Results (FON305) prior to taking this course.
