Description

Changing attitudes and building awareness of systemic barriers to inclusion are essential to fostering a welcoming and professional work environment. This course initiates a timely and meaningful conversation on how to identify and address the impacts of systemic racism in the workplace. Participants will advance their understanding of the challenges that accompany discrimination and learn concrete actions for confronting racism and creating meaningful change within the federal public service.

Topics include:

  • distinguishing between racism and systemic racism
  • contextualizing systemic racism
  • acknowledging systemic racism in the workplace
  • supporting a respectful and inclusive workplace
  • addressing systemic racism in the federal public service

Notes:

This participation-based course is intended for learners who are ready to advance their knowledge of race, racism, identity and inequality in a context where systemic racism is understood to be a human rights issue. Participants must have a solid understanding of the historical context of racism and how it has contributed to current societal inequities.

This advanced course requires participants to work in small groups on topics related to identifying and addressing racial issues, such as micro-inequities, micro-aggressions, racial profiling, gaslighting, etc. Participants must have knowledge of these concepts before attending this course.

Prerequisites:

Prior to registering for this course, participants must have completed Advancing the Conversation on Systemic Racism: Self-Assessment (INC116).
