Description

The Government of Canada serves a wide range of diverse communities, and the decisions it makes can have far-reaching impacts on people from many different backgrounds. This course introduces public servants to the concept of intersectionality and demonstrates how they can apply it to better understand and support the varied experiences of the populations they serve. Participants will explore how overlapping social identities, such as race, gender, class, sexuality, and disability, shape lived experiences and contribute to systemic barriers, and learn how intersectionality can inform more inclusive policies, programs, and services.

Topics include:

  • examining the history and foundations of intersectionality
  • recognizing how different identities intersect and intertwine to shape lived experiences
  • understanding how similar situations can affect people differently based on their identities
  • applying an intersectional lens to the development of policies, programs, and initiatives
