Description
Indigenous data sovereignty recognizes the ability of Indigenous Peoples and communities to control data that is created with or about themselves as they see fit. As the Government of Canada advances the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDA), it is rethinking practices around how data about Indigenous Peoples is being collected, managed and shared to facilitate Indigenous data sovereignty. The 2023–2026 Data Strategy for the Federal Public Service commits to advancing a whole-of-government approach to the management and sharing of Indigenous data.
This fifth event in the series, hosted by the GC Data Community, will explore why the Government of Canada’s practices have historically been incompatible with Indigenous data sovereignty and highlight the initiatives currently being developed to transition from the role of data holder to data steward.
Participants will be able to explain the Government of Canada’s goal to repatriate federally held information and recognize Indigenous jurisdiction over Indigenous data by the end of this event.
