Description

Indigenous languages are a fundamental and valued element of Canadian culture, and there is an urgency to preserve them. Developed in close collaboration with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, the Indigenous Languages Act received Royal Assent on June 21, 2019, to support the reclamation, revitalization, maintenance and strengthening of Indigenous languages in Canada.

This event explores the history and legal framework of the Indigenous Languages Act and features examples of some of the actions already taken to preserve and revitalize Indigenous languages.

Participants will learn about the cultural importance of the Indigenous Languages Act and how it represents a significant step forward in acknowledging and safeguarding the rich linguistic diversity of Indigenous communities in Canada.
