Understanding the impacts of racism and discrimination  is essential to fostering respectful relationships and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. This online self-paced course examines the historical and contemporary foundations of racism and discrimination toward First Nations, Inuit and Métis through a distinctions-based, intersectional, and Gender-based Analysis Plus (GBA Plus) lens. Participants will expand their understanding of systemic racism, unconscious bias, allyship, and accountability, and explore practical ways to apply reconciliation principles in their day-to-day work.

Topics include:

• examining the historical foundations and ongoing impacts of colonial policies on First Nations, Inuit and Métis
• distinguishing between bias, prejudice, discrimination, and systemic racism
• applying GBA Plus and intersectionality to support inclusive policy, program, and service design
• exploring allyship, accountability, and culturally respectful practices in the workplace
• understanding the role of the public service in advancing reconciliation through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
