Description

Understanding the history, identity, and contributions of the Métis Nation provides important context for strengthening relationships with one of the three distinct Indigenous Peoples recognized in the Constitution Act, 1982. This online self-paced course explores the emergence of the Métis Nation, key historical events, the evolution of Métis governance and advocacy, the recognition of Métis rights, and contemporary reconciliation efforts while highlighting the diversity, resilience, and contributions of the Métis Nation in Canada. Participants will expand their understanding of the Métis Nation's unique history, culture, governance, and legal rights, as well as exploring how this knowledge can support respectful engagement and informed decision-making in the federal public service.

Topics include:

• exploring the emergence of the Métis Nation as a distinct Indigenous People, including its history, identity, and culture
• examining significant historical events, including the Red River Resistance, the Northwest Resistance, the scrip system, and Métis political resurgence
• understanding the recognition of Métis rights through landmark Supreme Court decisions and self-government agreements
• reviewing contemporary reconciliation initiatives, including the Canada–Métis Nation Accord and the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
