Awareness of the Métis as one of the three distinct Indigenous Peoples under the Canadian constitution is an important step on the journey to reconciliation. This online self-paced course provides a brief introduction to the history and culture of the Métis Nation and the complexity of emerging Métis identity across Canada today. Participants will learn the significance of Métis self-identification and how the Métis had to fight for recognition of their Aboriginal rights and are now establishing their own governments.

Topics include:

  • using respectful terminology
  • recognizing the Métis Nation and its contribution to Canadian society
  • contemplating the historical and contemporary relationships between Métis and the Government of Canada
  • understanding the contemporary realities of the Métis Nation
