Learning about Indigenous Peoples and understanding their viewpoints with compassion is an important step towards building strong and respectful relationships. This exercise, delivered in partnership with KAIROS Canada, provides public servants with a unique participatory history lesson that focuses on the loss of Indigenous lands and the cultural assimilation policies. Participants will engage on intellectual and emotional levels to deepen their understanding of the shared history of Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.

This online self-paced course provides an overview of the historical relationship between Indigenous Peoples and the Government of Canada, from first contact to the present-day focus on rebuilding this foundational relationship. Participants will benefit from a broader understanding of the impacts of government decisions on Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous communities.
This course is designed to address the professional development and training requirements of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action #57. Following respectful protocols, participants will discover little-known historical facts, learn about the impacts of Residential Schools and the rights of Indigenous Peoples, and better understand the obligations of public servants towards Indigenous Peoples.
