Description

This course is reserved for public service executives.

Non-executives are invited to register for the non-executive equivalent An Introduction to Canada's Colonial History (IRA143) instead.

Public service leaders are responsible for knowing their country's history and acknowledging how past decisions are still impacting Indigenous populations. This course for executives provides an overview of the key events that make up Crown-Indigenous relationships and that have historically had a negative impact on Indigenous populations. Participants will review the recommendations of several important reports that propose concrete ways to make amends and overcome mistakes from the past.

Topics include:

  • acknowledging the harm created by the Indian Act
  • recognizing Canada’s colonial policies and practices, and their impacts
  • raising awareness about reports that aim to improve the well-being of Indigenous Peoples
  • taking concrete measures to advance reconciliation
  • finding inspiration to actively work at renewing relationships with Indigenous populations
