The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) provides comprehensive health and safety information on the safe use of hazardous products in Canadian workplaces. This online self-paced course offers an overview of the WHMIS 2015 changes, including updates to hazard classification, hazard labels and safety data sheets. Participants will learn about physical and health hazards encountered in the workplace, as well as controls for minimizing or eliminating exposure to hazardous materials.

Topics include:

  • defining the roles and responsibilities of suppliers, employers, and employees
  • identifying hazardous materials in the workplace
  • applying required elements and standards of WHMIS-compliant labels and safety data sheets
  • identifying controls for eliminating or minimizing exposure to hazardous materials

Notes:

In 2015, the Government of Canada amended the Hazardous Products Regulations and the Hazardous Products Act to align WHMIS with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). WHMIS 2015 sets forth the roles and responsibilities of suppliers, employers, and workers. It also includes new harmonized criteria for hazard classification, and updated requirements for hazard labels and safety data sheets.

This course was developed with subject matter support provided by the Pinchin Group of Companies, an environmental and health and safety consulting firm with offices across Canada. Course materials and content were current with the laws and regulations at the time of the last expert review; however, they may not reflect the most current legal developments.
